3 years ago yesterday, George Floyd was brutally murdered in cold blood by Derek Chauvin. This murder was a memorable event in many Americans’ lives, as it briefly sparked massive Black Lives Matter protests and riots across the United States for several weeks. Let’s reflect on this event, and whether it is the place of the state to murder its own citizens
How did a DiEM collective go from three people in a video call to running in the Bremen state elections? I got a chance to interview the founders and leaders of this successful collective and learn what worked for them. Calls to free Palestine, free Iran, and democratize Europe are great sentiment, but without the organization or willingness to act, the calls ring hollow. It is insufficient to chant the right thing once a year, nothing will change without voting, direct action, or ideally both.
Civil disobedience will not be enough to prevent the worst outcomes of global warming we’re now heading towards, nor will holding signs outside of Air Force bases be enough to prevent nuclear war. XR and Last Generation can be entry points in which people organize, and participate, and then most importantly- campaign, and vote during elections.
What is to be done? Gun control? Armed teachers? Kinderguardians?
Maybe electing a president who improved the livelihoods and social and economic conditions for Americans would be the most rational way to combat school shootings. Many Americans seem to disagree though
Act now while you can, and we can solve our issues, but to do so we have to survive, and we are not currently on track to do that. Let’s stop acting like crazy suicidal fools, and do whatever is necessary to live freely and sustainably.
